Residents lacked nearby spaces for relaxation and wellness, forcing older adults to travel for peaceful outdoor areas. The project added two tranquil spaces to Bustani Ya Upenda garden: a wooden arbor with benches and a zen area with a solar fountain, lighting and sculpture. Volunteers, including older adults, helped build the spaces, which now offer calm and connection. A neighborhood leader didn't use to visit, but now visits often, saying he is impressed by the beauty created with older adults in mind.

To ensure the crop's success, they also held a demonstration to teach residents how to plant, care for and harvest garlic. In addition to improving residents' physical health through nutritious food, organizers say the gardens will support mental health, too, by combating social isolation. The Network continues to host workshops and provide seeds, tools and other support to gardeners at both housing complexes.

Description: Hill City's community garden needed a reliable water source to expand food production for local families and older adults. The project installed a 1,500-gallon cistern connected to a solar-powered pump, ensuring steady irrigation. Volunteers helped prepare and place the cistern, and a kick-off event marked the upgrade. The improvement makes the garden more sustainable, enabling greater participation and more produce for food pantries and homebound residents. "It brings great joy to see those little seeds become big plants and to see all the visiting and teaching and learning that happens," a participant said.

Description: STL Village partnered with volunteers from the community to restore the Lewis Place Community Garden, which had gone unplanted during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Neighborhood residents formed a garden committee charged with maintaining the site going forward. STL Village also created a resource guide for local older adults with a specific focus on services for low-income families.
