LaGrange County, IN

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023

Project Category: Walkability

Description: Without sidewalks, residents and visitors in Mongo walked along a busy county road, creating safety hazards. The project installed more than 70 feet of new sidewalk, linking existing paths and extending a route to the town park. This improvement gives older adults and tourists a secure alternative to walking in traffic and completes a key segment of a long-term plan for safer mobility. It also sets the stage for future expansions so no one has to walk in the street to reach local destinations.

Taunton, MA

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023

Project Category: Walkability

Description: The project addressed the lack of a safe walking route in downtown Taunton, a barrier for older adults seeking fitness and recreation. To address this, the Foundation completed walk audits and gathered public input to design a three-mile trail through the business district. Plans include signage, maps and creative features like Rock Snakes to spark engagement. Improvements identified during audits will make the area more walkable, creating a destination that encourages residents of all ages to stay active.

Dunstable, MA

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023

Project Category: Walkability

Description: With no sidewalks in its historic center, even short walks to the library required police escorts, leaving older adults and children at risk. To address this, the town led three walk audits and community meetings to map hazards and revive plans for a sidewalk linking the center to the library. The audits also identified informal paths for conversion to accessible trails and informed updated design documents for a larger network. Officials are now pursuing state funding for new connectors.
