Like many Americans living below the federal poverty level, many residents of Wichita had no easy way to access the internet. To solve this the City of Wichita launched the Wichita Hot Spot initiative. Older adults living in low-income areas can now check out a mobile connectivity device from a Neighborhood Resource Center and use it at home for up to two weeks. The hot spots -- small devices that provide a wireless internet connection -- are meant to be easy for older adults to activate, helping reduce social isolation and narrow the digital divide. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the hot spots continued to be popular, and the program's success led the City to request a Community Development Block Grant to purchase more devices.

Kendallville, IN
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021
Project Category: Public space activation
Description: The City of Kendallville was looking to add more greenspace to its downtown as part of a streetscape revitalization project. To achieve this, the City created an ADA-compliant pocket park with walking paths, tables, benches, shade pergolas and new trees and flowers. Organizers also added a large driveway to accommodate the village's mobile stage, which allows the space to host outdoor entertainment. Ambient lighting and parking pads for food trucks rounded out the improvements, which make the park welcoming for visitors of all ages and abilities.
Ogden, UT
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2018
Project Category: Innovative home maintenance, repair and support services
Description: As part of long-term revitalization efforts, community leaders have worked to provide safe, quality housing options for low-income families, older adults and veterans living in Ogden's Jefferson Park neighborhood. To build momentum for the initiative, Habitat for Humanity recruited 1,400 volunteers, who completed nearly 70 home repair and renovation projects over a 16-week period. Their work included roof repairs, ramp, deck and fencing installations and yardwork. Additionally, volunteers made upgrades to a popular playground. Organizers say the project restored a sense of neighborhood pride and inspired ongoing improvements, including plans to build affordable housing and renovate a community center in the neighborhood.
Rockford, IL
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022
Project Category: Innovative home maintenance, repair and support services
Description: The City launched its Neighborhood Improvement Initiative, focusing on six neighborhoods in Rockford with many older adult residents. The effort connected residents with community agencies and resources. Additionally the project focused on neighborhood beautification. The City held neighborhood clean-up parties and identify home entrances in need of repairs.

Project Category: Engaging residents in vibrant public places
Description: The Wichita Public Library and Bike Walk Wichita launched three historical walking tours, which can be accessed through a smartphone app. It's all about inspiring curiosity in people about their hometown. According to Jeff Flor of the Downtown Development Corporation, Wichita has a lot of stories to tell, from the drugstore sit-in during the Civil Rights movement to the now-gone Victory Arch honoring World War I soldiers. To promote the app, library staff and volunteers participated in an open streets festival while wearing t-shirts with the message Ask me how to travel time.

Project Category: Public space activation
Description: This project will install benches, bench swings and concrete artwork to encourage intergenerational engagement and provide places for rest and conversation along walking paths and in a community garden.
