Central Falls, RI

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024

Project Category: Public space activation

Description: Older adults in Central Falls lacked safe, weather-protected spaces for year-round socialization, leaving gatherings vulnerable to rain and cold. Progreso Latino installed and weatherized four pavilions with lighting, heating and retractable curtains, creating multi-use spaces for exercise and cultural events. The improvements allow older adults to gather safely in all seasons and are expected to support community activities for 15 years or more. At the ribbon-cutting, one participant said the celebration was "a testament to the power of culture, community and shared traditions under the shelter of a new gathering place."

Davenport, WA

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2026

Project Category: Public space activation

Description: Improvements such as parking upgrades, lighting, seating and a covered entrance will turn an aging facility into a safe, inviting space. These updates will support older adults daily use and boost the center’s visibility and role in the community.

Clarion, IA

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021

Project Category: Public space activation

Description: A dilapidated, abandoned building sat in the heart of Clarion's downtown business district. But city officials were concerned demolishing the building would result in a missing tooth -- a vacant lot not conducive for redevelopment. The City made the difficult decision to tear down the building, but rather than leave the site empty they turned the space into a pocket park. Equipped with accessible picnic tables and new trees, bushes, planters and attractive grasses, the new green space gives residents easy access from a parking lot to the shops and restaurants on Central Avenue.

Orofino, ID

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023

Project Category: Public space activation

Description: Residents in Orofino lacked places to rest along a hilly one-mile loop connecting a long-term care facility, hospital and parks. This made walks difficult for older adults and those without cars. The city installed eight ADA-compliant benches at key spots near the river, high school and skate park. Volunteers age 50-plus helped with site prep and placement decisions. The benches quickly became gathering points for relaxation and conversation.

Kamiah, ID

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2018

Project Category: Public space activation

Description: To create a gathering place for their rural community and provide opportunities for social connection, the Carrot Ridge Volunteer Fire District equipped its red-sided, barn-like building with tables, chairs and small appliances. They then hosted a dinner to thank the many volunteers who donated time, land, building supplies and more to build the center during its construction. Since then, the center has hosted chili cook-offs, a community Thanksgiving event and barbeques for hundreds of residents.
