Description: Older residents in Grahamtown lacked safe, comfortable outdoor spaces, making it hard to join events or enjoy gardens without worrying about fatigue or sun exposure. The team installed benches, picnic tables and planters at parks, gardens and community spaces. Volunteers also added address plates for safety. These changes gave older adults places to rest and socialize, strengthened community engagement and even prompted the addition of street lighting. Residents say the improvements make them feel valued and included in revitalization efforts.
West Fargo, ND

Project Category: Public space activation
Description: As part of efforts to attract visitors to its downtown, the City of West Fargo hoped to turn its POW/MIA Plaza on Sheyenne Street into a gathering space. To do this, the City purchased game tables for a previously underused portion of the plaza. "This project helped demonstratethe importance of creating opportunities for fun and safe activities in the city's new and improved downtown area," City Planner Malachi Petersen said. "It is our hope that this project will lead to future projects which encourage walkability and active lifestyles in our community." Today the plaza hosts community events, including a farmers market. Project organizers hope to replicate the games in other parts of West Fargo in the future.

Description: Many riders who wanted low-impact exercise or an easy way to get around could not use the standard bike share fleet, which made trips difficult for people with limited balance or strength. To address this, the program added e-bikes and adaptive bikes, promoted them at pop-up events and created a video featuring riders age 50-plus. Volunteers helped explain the bikes and encourage new users. The additions led to greater participation among older riders and offered a more comfortable way to stay active. One rider said the adaptive bikes made outings easier, noting, "I didn't have to struggle with my balance... they make me want to get out and enjoy rides more often."
