Manchester, NH

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2018

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: Part of larger efforts to draw people to spend time in downtown Manchester, this project made placemaking improvements to Arms Park. Manchester Connects engaged a local company to design custom chairs for the space, which can gently rock. Additionally, they installed picnic tables, benches and a concrete cornhole set in the park. The park -- located on the banks of the Merrimack River -- is a historic place in the city's core. Organizers hope the new amenities help the park act as a third space -- a public place people can gather without having to spend money.

Pass Christian, MS

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: Pass Christian lacked dedicated pickleball courts despite growing interest among older adults. To meet demand, the city built two full-size courts with benches and fencing in War Memorial Park, marking their opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Lighting for evening play will follow. The courts offer a new recreational option that promotes balance and social connection, and plans include leagues and tournaments to engage residents of all ages. "We are so glad that we will not have to travel out of town anymore to play pickleball now that the city has two new courts to play on!" said one resident.

Camp Verde, AZ

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: The Town of Camp Verde's Parks & Recreation Division thought the community's outdoor pool had potential as an event and education space. To achieve their vision, volunteers laid concrete pavers, installed shade structures and added picnic tables. They also constructed a new fence to the patio. The improvements allowed the Town to increase recreational programming onsite, including exercise classes and a summer camp. Additionally, families can lease the space for parties and other gatherings.

Estherville, IA

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: To improve its recreation facilities, the City of Estherville asked residents for their ideas about how to improve local outdoor spaces. In response to this feedback, the City added special playground swings at the community's parks that are suitable for users of various skills, sizes and ages. The generation swings are two swings in one -- a combined adult swing and a swing for babies and toddlers. This enables children to swing face-to-face with their adult.
