Elk City added nine new table gardens -- designed to accommodate gardeners who use wheelchairs or can't bend easily -- to make its community garden more accessible and appealing to all ages. To accommodate the table gardens, the City laid down gravel. They also added three benches installed on concrete pads. The improvements spurred the City to take on the expense of the garden's water, sewer and electric usage. Since the improvements, the City is exploring the possibility of adding shade structures to shield the benches from the sun, as well as hanging baskets of flowers or vegetables.

Fulton, NY

Description: A neglected downtown gazebo was long in disrepair, eroding community pride and limiting public use. Volunteers revived it by cleaning, painting and adding flowers, trees and banners, turning it into a centerpiece. Older adults led improvements to 17 public gardens and created a new logo displayed on garden flags citywide. The effort reignited civic spirit, prompting the return of the Fulton Garden Club after 15 years. "Wow that looks great... You guys are the best! Thank you for caring," said one resident. Plans for more projects are already underway.
Vassalboro, ME

Description: In rural Vassalboro, older adults lacked spaces for outdoor activity and fresh food access. The town created four raised garden beds and installed two benches, with volunteers and a local nursery providing soil and plants. The gardens offer a place for older adults to garden, socialize and learn, with plans for expansion and multigenerational programs. One veteran who lives in an apartment said he that was happy to participate in the project because he has no place to garden, and was excited to help encourage other older adults.
Jackson, KY

Description: Flooded green space in Jackson left older adults with few options for healthy activity or fresh food. The district converted the area into community gardens with raised beds and buckets, inviting older adults from six counties to plant and maintain crops. Volunteers helped build the beds, and produce was shared locally. At one site, adults harvested enough tomatoes and cucumbers to make pickles and juice together, turning the project into a social experience that boosted physical and mental health.

Description: Older adults and residents with mobility challenges struggled to access all areas of the Rook Event Center because temporary wooden handrails were unstable and unsafe. Friends of the Rook replaced them with permanent, ADA-compliant handrails at key locations, including the top level, doorway transition and patio ramp. Volunteers assisted with design and cleanup. The new handrails improved safety and accessibility, enabling older adults to navigate the space confidently. At a recent fundraiser, many used the handrails to reach the lower level, and the project sparked community interest in further accessibility upgrades.

Description: The Kiowa Tribe will host a Tiny Home for Elders Design Competition to develop affordable, accessible, and culturally relevant housing for older adults.
