Description: The Aguila Community Center in rural Aguila is a community hub for residents of all ages, despite its aging infrastructure, leaky roof and signs of wear and tear. To make the facility useable during the monsoon season, leaders at the center fixed the concrete floor with laminate plank flooring and weatherized the roof to make the facility fully functional. Since the improvements, the Aguila Community Center has hosted COVID-19 vaccine clinics, fitness classes, quincenearas and other community celebrations and events during all months of the year.

Description: Garden classes for older adults were in high demand, but without an on-site space, participants lacked hands-on experience. The city transformed a courtyard into a pollinator garden by clearing invasive plants, preparing soil and installing beds, a bench and educational signage. One volunteer even signed up as a future instructor, showing how the project sparked new connections and expanded opportunities for experiential learning.

They then added a basketball hoop and oversized checkerboard painted on the pavement. They also installed benches and picnic tables onsite. To give community members access to fresh, healthy produce, they set up garden boxes for growing fruits and vegetables and planted fruit trees. Organizers say the improvements have led to more older adults spending time outdoors, actively participating in activities.

Description: An aging electrical system threatened food safety and posed a fire hazard at the county's largest free meal site. Frequent breaker failures risked spoiling food for older adults who rely on hot meals three times a week. The kitchen replaced the outdated breaker box and 24 breakers, relocating the system away from a wet area to meet safety codes. This upgrade ensures stable power for cooking and cold storage, protecting food supplies and allowing the kitchen to continue serving thousands of meals safely for years to come.
