Tampa, FL

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2022

Project Category: Trails

Description: Disconnected sidewalks and a "crosswalk to nowhere" kept older adults at Mary Walker Senior Apartments from safely reaching Takomah Trail Park. The city fixed the crosswalk, added ADA-compliant sidewalks and built a new walkway linking the park loop to the apartments. At the ribbon-cutting, one resident said, "The walkway at Takomah Trail Park is great... I can enjoy these safety improvements," underscoring how the project promotes health and independence through safe, accessible paths.

Dryden, NY

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2018

Project Category: Trails

Description: To encourage people to use the Dryden Rail Trail, the Town of Dryden set out to provide resting places and information along the trail. They installed seven benches and three kiosks along the 2.9-mile path, which connects the villages of Dryden and Freeville. The kiosks display maps, trail rules and more. Today, the Town Recreation Department offers intergenerational programming on the trail, including fitness walks, bike outings and community running events.

Acton, ME

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023

Project Category: Trails

Description: Goat Hill's sweeping views were out of reach for many due to steep terrain and a lack of accessible trails. The Land Trust added cedar benches, signage and kiosks along the newly built trail. This made it easier for older adults and people with mobility challenges to enjoy the climb. Outreach events promoted the trail's inclusive design, and it's now featured in a forthcoming book on accessible trails. "It's a beautiful place for families of all physical abilities to explore and enjoy," said one visitor, underscoring its role in inspiring future projects.

Berkeley Heights, NJ

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021

Project Category: Improved wayfinding

Description: Officials with the Berkeley Heights Township have long worked to encourage residents to walk. To that end, an award-winning master plan focuses on making the community more pedestrian-friendly. To better inform people about local walking trails, the Township created the Trailblazer project. The wayfinding initiative installed sign kiosks at four locations, including the municipal complex, two parks and the community YMCA. Each displays maps of the township and its trails and provides paper copies for passersby to take with them.
