Phoenix, AZ

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024

Project Category: Walk Audits

Description: A key Phoenix corridor lacked safe, walkable conditions, creating hazards for older adults who rely on it as a primary route. To address this, TigerMountain Foundation led a walk audit that identified broken sidewalks and poor crossings, engaged volunteers and added several hazards to the city's official repair list. The project educated residents on how to report issues and spurred interest among officials to prioritize fixes. TMF used the city's 311 system to escalate forgotten repairs, ensuring improvements move forward.

Centennial, CO

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2024

Project Category: Walk Audits

Description: Older adults and people with mobility challenges faced barriers accessing a 71-mile urban trail, making safety and usability urgent concerns. The project engaged residents in walk audits and partnered with local university students for a trail-wide accessibility review. Feedback led to a pilot "slow zone" to curb speeding cyclists and informed plans for resurfacing that will widen paths and add ADA ramps. These audits created a model for future engagement, ensuring older adults voices shape trail improvements.

Tulsa, OK

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2025

Project Category: Park enhancements

Description: Tulsa Route 66 Main Street worked to restore a neglected park where older adults had no safe place to walk or gather. The group installed a new chat trail at Howard Park and cleared the area so residents could move comfortably and view nearby monuments. A ribbon cutting drew local interest and volunteers helped complete the work while Main Street continued plans for added lighting, bicycle stations and a roadside attraction. Residents shared memories of the park and said they were glad to see it cared for again. The project marks the first step toward bringing new life to a historic space and giving older adults a safe outdoor place to use regularly.

Tulsa, OK

AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021

Project Category: Public art installations

Description: Until recently, Tulsa's Greenwood neighborhood was a food desert, with fresh and healthy food difficult to find. When the Oasis Fresh Market opened in North Tulsa, the Met Cares Foundation wanted to celebrate a healthier future. So they engaged the community to paint a mural for the new store. First, project organizers called on local students to create drawings celebrating the theme A Healthy Future for All Generations. Residents then voted on their favorite designs, selecting winners from elementary, middle and high school students. Finally, North Tulsa artists painted murals on the market's wall, using the students' designs as inspiration. Project organizers say the beautification effort allowed community members to depict a hopeful future for Greenwood. They plan to make the design contest an annual event.
