Andrew College activated an empty space in downtown Cuthbert into a practical, attractive gathering space, which they dubbed Magnolia Alley. Two murals by Andrew College artists already decorated the alley, since the college hosts events in the adjoining square. To make the space more useable for famers markets, art receptions and other gatherings, volunteers added benches, lighting and a hardwood pergola to provide shade.

Pleasant Hill, MO

Description: Limited seating in Pleasant Hill's park and recreation complex made it harder for older adults and people with mobility challenges to rest, watch events and stay engaged. The City of Pleasant Hill installed benches, picnic tables and a swing at both sites, placing them near paths and activity hubs to create reliable rest spots. Description: Roswell often experiences daytime temperatures well over 112 degrees Fahrenheit. The tourist town also welcomes more than 200,000 tourists each year. This project set out to help visitors and residents alike walk in downtown Roswell despite the brutal heat. Over the course of several years, Maitreet Roswell collected plastic bottle caps and container lids -- part of an effort it called Bottlecaps to Benches. Project organizers then sent a tractor trailer full of the caps to a recycling plant in Indiana, which sent back 30 benches made from recycled plastic. Maitreet Roswell then installed the benches throughout the town's commercial district, allowing pedestrians to sit and recover from the heat.

The garden now provides nutritious food for families and older adults, supports healthy living and reconnects residents after years without a shared space. Description: 360 Albany set out to improve access to fresh food, outdoor activity and digital skills for older adults who lacked inclusive garden spaces and support using technology. The team installed raised beds, added ADA-compliant seating and hosted gardening workshops that taught older adults how to grow produce and stay active. Digital literacy sessions helped participants learn how to navigate health portals, manage online tasks and connect with family. One participant said the garden changed her days completely after planting for the first time in years and learning to video chat with her granddaughter. The improvements strengthened social ties, increased food access and created lasting opportunities for older adults to garden, learn and stay connected.
