Two public libraries made their public spaces more inviting and functional through repairs, beautification and accessibility upgrades. In the Town of Liberty, Liberty Library improved lighting at its building entrance, which increased a sense public safety. The library also added lighting to an outdoor area already equipped with a chess and checkers table and planters. Carver Memorial Library in Searsport upgraded its electric system to allow for brighter lighting, with fixtures selected to echo the building's historic architecture. An alcove with large-print books also received custom-made shelving. Following these improvements, the libraries increased programming offerings for older adults.

Bethel, ME
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021
Project Category: Public space activation
Description: To provide residents with places to sit and gather, the Bethel Age-Friendly Community partnered with local artists and craftspeople to create benches and picnic tables. As a thank-you to organizations that have supported age-friendly work in the region, organizers gave the seating to partner organizations who assist with age-friendly programming, events and volunteer efforts. The benches and tables now sit in each of the six towns that make up the Bethel region. Each table is adorned with a chess board and each bench features decorations that pay homage to the town where it sits, with volunteers chipping in to paint the furniture. Organizers say they hope the project demonstrates the value of simple public space enhancements.
Haigler, NE

Description: This project revitalized an abandoned set of basketball and tennis courts, with one of the latter turned into a pickleball court. It also installed ADA-compliant benches and repaired light poles.
Lawrence, NE
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2021
Project Category: Park enhancements
Description: The local park in Lawrence lacked places for visitors to sit. To make the park more accessible for people of all ages and abilities, the Nuckolls County Federation and Lawrence Community Fund installed park benches and ADA-compliant picnic tables near the town's swimming pool and sports fields. The improvements built on work the partners already do to provide amenities for the village, including playground equipment and trash receptacles. Now that the park is more welcoming, community members are looking into other ways to improve the space, including replacing an outdated merry-go-round.

Bowdoinham, ME
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2017
Project Category: Community Gardens
Description: The Town of Bowdoinham provided elevated planters to six residents who, because of disabilities, could not maintain traditional, in-the-ground gardens. Members of the local Masons Lodge constructed the raised beds and delivered soil to each recipient. To showcase the planters, the Town hosted a community meal featuring local produce, which included a presentation about the benefits of raised beds. In addition, the Town founded a garden club, which meets monthly.
Chelsea, ME
AARP Community Challenge Grant Year: 2023
Project Category: Community Gardens
Description: This project will create an intergenerational, accessible community garden at an elementary school, with eight raised beds and an accessible bench, as well as signs and decorative artwork created by the students.
